Safety, Health, and Environmental Application for International Energy Company

Sigma has recently completed a web application and database development project for an international electricity and gas utility company. The client has operations in the United Kingdom and United States and is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the world.

Business Challenge

The client has been expanding operations and growing in size over the years and was in need of a centralized application to manage safety, health, and environmental data.  Individual subsidiaries were collecting and managing their own data using different methods and platforms, and the lack of consistency made it difficult for the parent company to analyze data and develop improvement strategy.  The client also employs a large number of contractors and was manually tracking contractor data using several spreadsheets and needed a better solution to handle contractor data and monitor their performances.

Sigma was charged to develop a new system that meets the needs of individual subsidiaries operating in different countries, ensures consistent reporting of data across all subsidiaries for corporate-wide analysis, and integrates legacy data from different sources.

Development of an international application presents a unique set of challenges due to regional differences in regulatory requirements, language, time zone, date format, currency, etc.  Sigma has developed a globalized web application that addresses these issues by defining country-specific requirements and integrating them into the system.  The application presents the user with customized interfaces based on the user’s location detected during login.

The application takes into account existing workflow constraints, hardware and software compatibility issues, and other client-specific needs identified during the requirements gathering process.  It helps improve productivity by allowing supervisors to enter and update their own cases, upload important documents, check their safety performances, and generate reports.  Most regulatory forms can be prepared electronically, pre-filled with necessary information, and incident data can be electronically transferred to another department.  The application also provides periodic reports that summarize performance statistics for individual department and gathers the information necessary for a root-cause analysis.  The client can use this analysis to supplement its incident prevention activities and adjust the training courses.

To ensure confidential and sensitive information is secure and only accessed by authorized personnel, the application resides within the corporate Intranet protected by a firewall and utilizes audit trails and additional security measures.
